Introduction

Welcome to Enough-for-me.com – authored by my husband Todd and myself as a way to share with you the beauty and pain of working the medical field, as well as detail the freedom and hardship of living in an under resourced community. Todd is a Family Medicine physician, and I am a Pediatrician. Finishing medical residency in the summer of 2021, we were certain we wanted our first jobs to challenge us intellectually, develop us emotionally, and strengthen us spiritually. Our search lead us to the Indian Health Services as we took positions at a regional hospital on Navajo Nation in Arizona.

We chose the title for our website out of a deep appreciation for another physician – Dr. Louis Pasteur. Outside of the old Cook County Hospital building in Chicago, IL, there is a statue erected in honor of Dr. Pasture which reads, “One does not ask of one who suffers, what is your country and what is your religion. One merely says, you suffer, this is enough for me. You belong to me, and I shall help you.” Many afternoons, when Todd and I were medical students (and young loves) in Chicago, we would sit in front of that statue and remind ourselves of exactly why we wanted to become physicians. We have since then promised to hold each other to this “no questions asked” policy when it comes to the service of others – at least as best as humanly possible. Here, you will find an honest reflection of our attempts.

We also acknowledge, that “our” story of Reservation life is by no means “the” story. And so, we will also invite others whose life and role is different than ours to contribute to the picture as guest writers. Every once in a while, you may also find here some written considerations more related to life in general than to medicine. You must understand that for us, the two are inseparable. We welcome you to join us on this journey – whether that be by following online, writing to us, or just maybe – coming to visit in person.

Grace and peace,

Ashley & Todd
